VolleyWrite Buddy app running on an iPad mounted on the pole at Elder High School

When you're officiating a volleyball match, communication is king!

That's why we have reminders in VolleyWrite to help scorers of any level of expertise/ experience know when to communicate to the other officials.

And now we've taken it a step further:

Introducing the VolleyWrite Buddy app!  The Buddy is an iOS app that is available in the App store for a one-time fee.   The Buddy app has an R2 view and an R1 view.  If bench personnel want to use the app on an iPhone on their bench, they can use the R1 view, which is the default view. The iPad adjusts to the layout of your iPad, whether it is in landscape or portrait orientation.  For the iPhone, you may select the R1 or R2 view, but only portrait orientation is supported.

VolleyWrite sends information to the Buddy (or Buddies) via bluetooth.  This information includes team names, sets won, points, timeout counts, sub counts and possibly challenge counts (if using NCAA rules and enabling challenges on the Rules tab).

A Buddy displays the information in a layout similar to the Officials' Combo external display option.

As of April of 2025, bluetooth communication software been added to the Windows version of VolleyWrite.  Beginning with version 8.0, the VolleyWrite software available on the Resources page includes an updated Rules tab with a Connections page to enter licenses and manage the Buddy and other integrations.  We expect to add this feature to the iPad version of VolleyWrite as well.

The iOS VolleyWrite Buddy app that runs on an iPad or iPhone is a one-time fee in the App store.  To provide the information to the Buddy app, there is an add-on license to communicate to a Buddy.  This add-on license is installed on the Connections page of the Rules tab.  We kept it separate from other VolleyWrite licenses because we don't want anyone who has no desire to use a Buddy to pay for this feature.  The Shop page lists the current offerings.

A Buddy license operates on top of a standard scoring license, meaning that if your VolleyWrite license expires (as shown on the Welcome tab), you will not be able to score matches and send the information.

Search for the iOS VolleyWrite Buddy app in the App store for more information.
